Special attractions: Bannack State Historic Park is about 20 miles west of Dillon on MT 278. The preserved ghost town of Bannack was Montanaâs first territorial capital and one of the original gold-rush towns. Today there is a visitor center and several historic buildings, as well as many tailings piles and mining equipment.
Finding the site: From Twin Bridges drive south on MT 41 for about 1 mile, turn right onto Melrose Road, and continue as it becomes Rochester Road for about 10 miles to the Rochester Mining district. There are numerous mines and abandoned tailings piles. There is some private property within the mining area so beware of active mining claims and their postings. Most claims are posted with small metal signs on short posts near the piles. There are plenty of abandoned tailings piles to dig through without poking around the claims.
